The Scottish Premiership has already kicked off this past weekend while the Premier League starts this Friday with Manchester United playing host to Leicester City.

And before the English 2018-19 season has begun football pundit Paul Merson has predicted that the Premier League will see a very similar battle to that of Rangers vs Celtic.

To give a bit of context, Celtic FC won the Scottish Premiership last season while Rangers finished third – a staggering 12 points behind the Hoops.

This season even though the Light Blues have brought Steven Gerrard as their new manager most people feel that they will not be able to beat Celtic to the title. Many pundits feel that even though the Gers will cut down the gap between them and their Old Firm rivals but eventually it will be the Hoops who will defend their title.

And Merson feels that a similar situation will unfold in the Premier League this season with Manchester City and Liverpool.

The former footballer has predicted that even though Liverpool will give a tough fight but eventually it will be Pep Guardiola’s side who will lift the trophy.

Merson said: Man City will win it by double digits.

“They looked ready to go in the Charity Shield, they’ve got very good players and a very big squad.

“They’ve got to start well – all their players were away at the World Cup but they’ve all come back and want to play, look at Kyle Walker.

“I think Liverpool will give it a go, they’ve bought very well but watching Man City I couldn’t believe how good they were,

Liverpool have to be patient – it’s like the Rangers-Celtic situation, they’ve just got to close the gap.”
