The current Premier League top-four race is one of the most intriguing and unpredictable ones we have seen in recent years with as many as five clubs still very much in the hunt to secure the final UCL spot on the table.

Man United and Leicester City have more or less secured the second and the third spot so the final position is up for grabs and teams like Chelsea, West Ham, Liverpool, Everton and Spurs are now all fighting for this elusive spot.

Chelsea currently occupy the fourth spot but the rest of the chasers are just round the corner but it looks like Liverpool have already given up hopes of a top-four finish despite being just five points behind the Blues.

Liverpool are currently sixth on the Premier League table with 46 points but according to Jurgen Klopp, it will be almost impossible for side to make up this gap by the end of May.

‘I like to be an optimist, but in the league it is almost impossible to qualify in the competition for the places that we have,’ Klopp said in a recent interview with Sport Bild as quoted by Sport Witness.

‘At Tottenham, Gareth Bale is now playing again, and they are also in the running. Plus City and Manchester United, who are far away. Chelsea is on the rise. Reaching Champions League qualification through the league will be difficult, we know that. You don’t usually win the Champions League itself in a year with injury worries as big as we have, you know that, Lothar.

‘The opponent usually doesn’t need a lot of chances against us because we make big mistakes, insane ones that can almost be described as slapstick.

‘On the other hand, we create a lot of chances, in the ‘expected goals’ we are still second behind Manchester City in the Premier League, but far from them in the ones we actually scored. This problem has been going on throughout the season.

‘It [no Champions League football] would mean a huge financial loss.’Otherwise not that much. I am aware: in almost all football clubs in the world, I would be questioned in a situation like our current one.

‘This is completely normal, reality, the business. I would accept that immediately, but it’s different here in Liverpool. Our owners, the sports director, even the players: nobody doubts anyone here. We have accepted the situation for ourselves and fight our way through it.’

This statement from the Liverpool manager will not go down too well with the club’s fans but will be music to the ears of all the other clubs who are battling for that final spot. If Klopp genuinely believes what he is saying then he will put all his focus on the Champions League meaning they are likely to drop even more points in the Premier League in the coming weeks.

Clubs like Chelsea and West Ham will be absolutely thrilled with Klopp’s statement since both of them are above Liverpool in the league table.

Jurgen Klopp will not put in a second string side for the remainder of the league matches, that’s for sure, but after beating RB Leipzig in the Champions League Round of 16, the manager’s primary focus will be on gaining entry into the UCL next season by winning the tournament this time around.
