The recent matchweek in the Premier League once again saw a lot of changes to the table with clubs like Chelsea, Spurs and Leicester all dropping points while Liverpool managed to pick up a fine win against Arsenal.
The 3-0 win over Arsenal means Liverpool have now moved to within two points of the top-four but according to BT Sport pundit Steve Sidwell, Liverpool are still likely to miss out on Champions League football with Chelsea being the favourites to retain their fourth spot.
“Leicester, with the experience they had of dropping out last season, and for Chelsea I think the result is a blessing in disguise,” Sidwell said on BT Sport, as quoted by TEAMtalk.
“When Tuchel came in, what he’s done, I think they’ll get over the line.”
But former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand feel Liverpool have gotten some of their confidence back after the win vs Arsenal and they have what it takes to see this one through.
“I think Liverpool are going to get in there now,” he predicted. “The result they got at the weekend, the performance and the confidence that will give that team.
“Fabinho back as well is a huge boost. Liverpool with how they’ve been in the last two seasons they have that know-how, that nous to go and put a run of results together.
“Out of Chelsea, Leicester, Liverpool and Spurs I think Liverpool is the one who could go on a six, seven game run. I’ve got a sneaky feeling they will. I hope not if I’m being honest.”
Liverpool have really upped their hopes of a top-four finish with that win vs Arsenal but the reality is that they still have a lot to do, especially with both Spurs and West Ham United having the same number of points(at the time of writing this) as the Anfield outfit.
Leicester City missed on Champions League football on the final day of the last Premier League season and we can’t write off another collapse from the Foxes especially after their average performance vs Man City on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho will know how to grind out results in the Premier League while West Ham United will be hoping their good form can help them get into the top-tier of European football next season. But given the average quality of their squads, we expect both these sides to fall out of the Premier League top-four race sometime in the coming weeks.
Chelsea might currently have a two-point lead over the other suitors but they still have to face really tough opponents like Man City, Leicester and Arsenal in the next few matchweeks. Liverpool, on the other hand, have only a key game vs Man United to worry about since all their other matches look pretty winnable.
