Liverpool have more or less wrapped up the Premier League title but now it’s the top-four race which is heating up with as many as seven clubs still in the hunt for the final Champions League spot.
Currently, Chelsea occupy the fourth spot on the Premier League table and their nearest rivals are just two points behind them.
But apart from Sheffield United being in the fifth spot, clubs like Spurs, Man United and Wolves are all breathing down the neck of the Blues and it’s anybody’s guess as to which club will finally be able to grab that elusive spot on the table.
Arsenal are currently the farthest away at the 10th spot but according to Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, the Gunners still have a fighting chance. Surprisingly though while making a top-four prediction, the Portuguese manager chose to leave aside the name of one major player.
“Wolves and Sheffield United are fighting for the top four, [the managers] they can say no, and I understand if they say no but the reality is that they are,” the Spurs boss told Sky Sports.
“Not just because of the position that they are in the table, but because of the power and quality
“They arrive in this situation where, in the eyes of everybody, they should be more than happy, but they are not more than happy. Wolves bought an important player [Daniel Podence for £17m] to try to improve their situation.
“Sheffield bought an important player [Sander Berge for £22m], they beat their record in the market to try to improve their team.
“So it’s not just about Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton. It’s not just about us. It’s also about these two clubs who I have to say [are] fantastic.”
Man United are currently eighth on the league table and they have a series of tough fixtures lined up in the coming months.
The games against the likes of Man City and Spurs would suggest that Ole’s men might miss out on the Champions League spot but thankfully they do have the Europa League to turn to given that they will gain direct entry into the UCL in case they can pick up this particular tournament.
