Right now there’s a huge debate if the Premier League along with the other leagues in Europe should be abandoned or not.
While some experts and clubs claiming that the season cannot be revived and that it should be declared null and void. But others think that this decision would be unfair to all the clubs who have worked so hard.
The authorities too do not want to abandon the current season primarily due to the massive losses that they would suffer but as things stand, this might be the only option.
And now speaking about the fate of the major leagues in Europe, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has suggested that if the leagues are not up and running by the end of June then they might very well have to cancel the whole of the 2019-20 season.
“Nobody knows when the pandemic will end,” he told Italian daily La Repubblica.
“We have a plan A, B or C: to restart in mid-May, in June or at the end of June.
“If then we wouldn’t be able to do any of these, the season would probably be lost. There is also the possibility of ending this season at the start of the next, which would then be postponed, starting a little later.
“We’re in touch with the leagues, the clubs, there is a working group and we’ll see what solution is best for all. We have to wait, like any other sector.”
This will be really grim news for clubs like Liverpool who are agonisingly close to winning their maiden Premier League title.
But all said and done, the millions of lives at stake are much more important than football and with the way things are going, it will be a real miracle if all the major leagues around Europe are back to their feet by the end of June.
And even if this final date is met even then it would mean that the teams would have to play behind closed doors and possibly get through three matches in a week.
The Premier League is currently suspended till the 30th of April with the authorities set to meet later this week to decide the next course of action.
