The pushing of the fixtures means a really massive problem for the schedule makers since along with the EPL, the Champions League and the Europa League have also been postponed. And to add to all the problems, the EURO is also scheduled to be held during the summer.
And while a lot of people have come up with a number of solutions to this issue but West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady has provided an alternative which could very well turn out into reality in the coming weeks.
Writing for The Sun, he said: “Suspension or cancellation of the league was always a certainty.
“There is no dodging the possibility that all levels in the EFL, as well as the Premier League, will have to be cancelled and this season declared null and void because if the players can’t play the games can’t go ahead.
“The PL hopes that an interlude of three weeks from today will enable it to restart but that may well be dreamland.
“So what if the league cannot be finished? As games in both the PL and in the EFL are affected, the only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void.
“Who knows who would have gone down or come up if the games have not actually been played in full?
“A huge blow to Liverpool who might be robbed of their first title in 30 years. This will be discussed between the PL and the clubs next week at an emergency meeting.”
Will the Premier League be cancelled?
The English football calendar is without a doubt one of most congested in Europe meaning it will be really tough for them to restructure the matches even if the tournaments were to resume after the 3rd of April.
But having said that, cancelling the Premier League will be the absolute last resort since a lot of teams will not be too happy with this decision.
Not only will Liverpool be devoid of their maiden EPL trophy but teams like Spurs and Manchester United will also be impacted since they are very close to playing in the Champions League next season.
Also, another major question that arises is what will happen to the sides who are currently in the relegation zone if the Premier League is cancelled?
