Manchester City beat Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 in the Champions League this week but no one is really talking about that emphatic performance.

Part because such a fine display is quite normal from a Pep Guardiola side and part because Raheem Sterling has been grabbing all the headlines.

Raheem Sterling scored a superb goal during the night and also helped win a penalty for Manchester City and it is this penalty that has become the centre of debate.

While the referee did not hesitate one bit before blowing his whistle but in reality, Raheem Sterling stumbled over and fell flat on his face inside the penalty box.

After the match, Sterling did apologize to the referee and now his manager Pep Guardiola has come out to show his support for the England international.

And in trying to defend his player, the City boss has drawn parallels with Liverpool’s James Milner.

A lot of people has been claiming that since the Shakhtar defender was nowhere close to Sterling when he fell down the English international should have gone up and told the referee the truth.

And replying to this question, Pep Guardiola said that Liverpool’s James Milner had a similar incident last season but he did not do anything to make amends.

Pep Guardiola said: “Last season (James) Milner could have admitted it was his pass for our offside goal.”

This statement obviously referred to Leroy Sane’s disallowed against Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals last year.

Manchester City will host Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend while Liverpool will take on Fulham at home on Sunday.

Both City and Liverpool are yet to lose a game in the league this season so it will be interesting to see if either United or Fulham can stop them in their tracks.
