Man United threw away yet another lead as they managed to pick up only a point against Southampton and according to Ralf Rangnick, his players need to keep their composure if they wish to get back to winning ways.

Jadon Sancho helped his side take the lead in the 21st minute but as the game went on Southampton clawed their way back and finally equalised in the 48th minute. After that, United looked completely lost out of ideas, as the case has been for the previous few games.

This 1-1 draw means Manchester United have now drawn their previous three matches, including the Middlesbrough game in the FA Cup. Rangnick though seems to have a pretty clear idea as to what is going wrong.

“It was very similar to previous games, unfortunately,” Rangnick told BBC Sport, as quoted. “It is the fourth game where we were ahead but took one point instead of three. It is difficult to take but we have to accept it.

“It was a very good first half hour. I was pleased with our performance. We didn’t allow them too many chances, but they had transitional moments in the first half and then scored an early goal in the second half.

“Then it was an open game, each team had chances. We had the clearer chances to win, but right now we are struggling to keep our composure and the structure for more than the first half.

“We have to understand where we are. [Southampton] won 3-2 at Tottenham. We got a point today, we expected three and needed three, but that is the situation.

“That is why there was a change of manager and why we are here.”

Why can Ralf Rangnick solve the issue at Man United?

Unlike Ole Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick knows exactly what’s going wrong and he’s even ready to speak about that in public. But no matter what he speaks, the interim manager just cannot seem to solve the issue.

Paul Scholes has even come out to claim that the German is not good enough to manage a team like Manchester United.

“It’s Manchester United, they should have the best of everything and to not have a plan and bring what is a sporting director, he’s coached a team two years out of the last 10,” said Scholes on BT Sport, as quoted.

“Don’t get me wrong, I like the man, he comes across well, but he’s looked like he’s lacked coaching in the last five or six years. They’re a team of individuals, you look at the difference today in Man United to Southampton.”

Scholes has hit the nail on the head in terms of asserting that Ralf Rangnick cannot seem to make the team play as one cohesive unit – not at least for the full 90 minutes.

Whenever Man United play as a team, they run riot but they cannot maintain the same intensity for the full game. Whenever there’s a quick turnover, all the players run like headless chickens and this is something that Ralf Rangnick needs to work on for the next few months.

The German is obviously an interim manager so his job will be to condition the players properly before the next manager comes in and by that time if he’s succeeded in making them play as a team, he would have done his job properly.
