Ex-Celtic man has backed Rangers to reach the UEL final but they must be wary of one thing

Former Celtic striker John Hartson has backed Rangers FC to overcome the RB Leipzig test to reach the Europa League final.

The ex-Bhoys man has come out to claim that Rangers are more than capable of overturning the 1-0 loss from the 1st leg but for that to happen, the Ibrox outfit cannot rely on past glory.

“You have to give Rangers the credit they deserve,” he said when asked about Rangers’ chances.

“They’ve found a way tactically, home and away, to win games. Ibrox has been a fortress for them, and I think they’ll turn that around on Thursday night, I think they’re capable. As long as they don’t get complacent and think ‘we did it against Braga, we did it against Dortmund, we did it against Red Star’.

“Forget all that, this is different, this is the semi-final. You need to turn up on the night, have the same performance. They will have the crowd, there’s no doubt they’ll have the crowd.”

Can Rangers FC beat RB Leipzig?

On paper, Leipzig are a better side but the Gers do have what it takes to go head to head with them but as Hartson said, Rangers cannot afford to get overconfident just because they have slain some big European teams in the previous rounds.

Teams like Braga and Red Star Belgrade are seasoned pros in the Europa League and the icing on the cake was knocking out Dortmund but Leipzig are a totally different test on a totally new matchday.

GvB will definitely bring these results up when giving his team talk but he will have to make sure his players put their feet on the peddle from the very first minute. A 1-0 deficit might look easy to claw back but if Leipzig can get a goal early then Rangers will have a mountain to climb.

Leipzig will go into this tie at the back of some dodgy form, losing their previous league tie 3-1 and the Gers boss will certainly look at how Adolf Hütter set up his Borussia M’Gladbach side for this match.

Ex-Celtic man praising Rangers FC?

A large contingent of Celtic fans will not be happy with the fact that their ex-striker has come out to support their arch-rivals but the reality is that Rangers FC have been a class apart in Europe.

Celtic are running away with the domestic league but in Europe, GvB has done wonders.

Even if they are knocked out in the semi-final, the Gers should be proud of themselves because just like Villarreal in the Champions League, Rangers FC have also beaten multiple European giants in the knockout stages of the UEL.

Obviously, this is a hard pill to swallow for the Hoops and if their local rivals do manage to achieve the unthinkable then their SPFL title this season will be absolutely worthless in the grander scheme of things.
