Rangers FC urged to snub their priority transfer target and go after this 29 Y/O: A sensible choice?

Rangers FC are making arrangements to sign the successor to Allan McGregor and according to many experts, the Gers top priority target right now is Dundee United’s, Benjamin Siegrist.

The Swiss U21 international joined Dundee in 2018 but he’s out of contract at the club at the end of this season. Rangers FC have been keeping tabs on him for a while now and according to The Mail, Seigrist could be heading to the Ibrox in the summer.

Many people are happy with this reported move but according to ex-Rangers keeper Cammy Bell, Van Bronckhorst should be looking to sign St Johnstone’s Zander Clark instead of Siegrist.

“I do think Benji would be a good addition to the squad, especially on a free transfer,” Bell has told Football Scotland.

“The big question would obviously be what position would he go in as? Would he go in as a number one or number two? To be honest, I don’t see him going in as a number one. I don’t think he’s quite ready for that yet.

“Zander was on the tip of my tongue when we were speaking about Benjamin. They are both of a similar ilk.

“Zander is a fantastic goalkeeper and one that must be on Rangers’ radar, being Scottish and playing so consistently for St Johnstone for such a long period.”

Why should Rangers FC go after Clark instead of Benjamin Siegrist?

Bell has a very simple answer to this question asserting that the St Johnstone No 1 has been playing at the top level in Scotland for far longer than Benjamin so he has much more experience – something which will come really handy when playing for a team like Rangers FC.

Bell adds: “Benjamin has done it for two or three years, Zander has done it for six or seven now. (Zander) is one that could come in and turn into a potential Rangers number one. If it was a straight choice, I’d pick Zander Clark because of the longevity he’s done it over.

“Also, the key factors that he’s won trophies in this country, which is difficult to do. Zander has got that winning mentality and winning feeling that you need to have as a Rangers player.

“Ultimately, you are there to win trophies. I just think that it would be a good move for Rangers to go and look at him.”

Who will Rangers FC choose?

Like Siegrist, Zander Clark is also 29 years old and he too is out of contract at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Clark has come up through the ranks at St Johnstone so he knows a lot more about top-level Scottish football than Siegrist.

This season both the players have pretty identical stats with Benjamin keeping five clean sheets in 16 Premiership matches and Clark keeping five in 18 top-flight appearances so there’s very little to differentiate between the two.

As things stand, Rangers FC have their full focus on the Dundee shot-stopper but since Zander Clark will also be a free agent in the summer, the Gers will definitely knock on his door in the coming days before they make a final call about handing the Dundee keeper a pre-contract.
