Portugal and Argentina were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup by France and Uruguay respectively and after their exits, everyone has been talking about Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Every major publication has been running the story of how Messi and Ronaldo have failed to bring glory to their respective countries and how this World Cup might just be the last for both these superstars.

But former England defender Rio Ferdinand might just be the only person who seems to have gotten one thing right about Portugal and Argentina’s exit from the World Cup.

After Ronaldo and Messi’s teams failed to qualify, Ferdinand sent out a tweet which clearly outlines the main reason why both the sides failed to qualify for the quarterfinals.

The former Manchester United centre-back wrote: “The 2 Greats have departed the #worldcup at the same stage on the same day…

“Ronaldo will be remembered at this World Cup for his hattrick against one of the favourites Spain… Messi for his one moment of brilliance against Nigeria! Just proves football is a TEAM game!”

With that tweet, Ferdinand seems to be perfectly in point.

Both Argentina and Portugal have failed to play together as one cohesive unit which has eventually come back to bit them.

Messi’s mediocre performances grabbed all the eyeballs resulting in the other Argentinian players to be under unnecessary pressure. On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo literally dragged Portugal to the Round of 16 and his teammates’ average performances was sure to catch up.
