Are Southampton not likely to sign any new players after a £76.1m net loss?

Southampton have just reported a £76.1 million net loss during the 2019-20 period which has prompted many to believe that the Saints are not expected to sign any new players during the January transfer window.

Last summer the Saints made a few transfers, including the signing of Kyle Walker-Peters from Spurs and there have been rumours that the manager is keen to bring in a few reinforcements for the remainder of the season.

With such a hefty loss many would think that Southampton would shelve plans of any transfer activity but that does not seem to be the case since Ralph Hasenhuttl has made it clear that the club will not shy away from buying players during the January transfer window – if required.

Hasenhuttl said, as reported: “Yes, we are still in the market [for players]. At the moment we are looking more for positions made for the future. We know we have some issues and this means that it is open.

“But we also know at the moment we are in a situation where every club is really struggling with the money and we have to take care of the future. That is the reason we have set ourselves the limits that we are able to handle.

“We must be clear if we really need something [we will get it], I think in the last games we had 8 academy players on the bench.

“This is the way we have to go at the moment to minimise the risk and I think in the winter transfer window, it isn’t 100% necessary for us.

“If we do something then we do it as a package for the future – like we did last time with Kyle Walker-Peters – where we signed him on loan, to have a look if he could help us and then we signed him in the summer when we have maybe also a few players out and we can speak about a fixed signing.”

Will the Saints be busy this month?

The Saints manager has surely put up a brave face despite such bad books but the reality is that the club have not been linked with too many players during the current month.

Lately, the experts have hinted that Southampton are eager to sign Man United full-back Brandon Williams on loan but apart from that, there’s no major activity in the Saints camp.

They have also been linked with a loan move for Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury but Brendan Rodgers is not keen to send him out.

So we doubt if Hasenhuttl will be too proactive in the market in the coming weeks and any major arrivals will only happen once the 2020-21 season concludes.
