Here’s why Arsenal aren’t likely to get their hands on this 23 Y/O midfielder: Where’s he headed to?

Arsenal are reportedly keen to make a move for Sheffield United’s 23-year-old defensive midfielder Sander Berge.

The Sheffield Star claims: “The Star understands that, after being made aware of Arteta’s interest, someone with knowledge of the deal they might table then began actively encouraging Jose Mourinho’s employers to enter the race.”

Sander Berge joined the Blades from Genk in January of 2020 but in such a short span of time, the 23-year-old has impressed massively, making 13 appearances in the Premier League so far. The midfielder’s progress was unfortunately halted as he had to undergo surgery in December and he has just returned from a long rehab program.

Arsenal brought in Thomas Partey last summer and someone like Berge will be the perfect partner for the former Atletico Madrid man next season. But there are a few reasons why the Gunners are not likely to get their hands on the 23-year-old.

The first reason being that Sheffield United reportedly want around £35million for the sale of Sander Berge and we don’t think the North London side will be able to afford such a huge fee, especially if they miss out on Champions League football.

Arteta wants to patch up some problematic areas in the summer and we doubt if the manager will be ready to spend so much money on a player who is yet to prove himself for a powerhouse side.

The other reason why Arsenal are likely to miss out on Sander Berge is because Liverpool are also interested in signing him and if Jurgen Klopp makes a move then the Emirates outfit will not even come close.

Liverpool are reportedly keen to replace Wijnaldum with the Sheffield United man and at Anfield, the 23-year-old will get to play in the Champions League and also challenge for the Premier League title next season.

If Liverpool are seriously planning to make a move then Berge’s decision should be simple and there’s nothing much Arsenal will be able to do(more so since they won’t be able to outbid Klopp’s side either).
