Chelsea to rival Manchester United in the signing of this 26 Y/O midfielder: Slipping away from Ole?

Chelsea look all set to rival Manchester United in the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, as per a report by Sport Witness.

They cite Mundo Deportivo saying: “Chelsea have ‘already asked’ about signing Atlético Madrid star Saúl Ñíguez, according to Mundo Deportivo.

“Mundo now explain the La Liga winners ‘would not frown on’ the player leaving the Wanda Metropolitano because he is no longer an untouchable in the squad. Atlético ‘welcome the sale’ of Saúl, who is ‘determined’ to leave the club.

“The Spain international’s exit will help Diego Simeone’s side to make money and the funds can be used to undertake incoming operations.

“According to the claims, the Madrid based club would accept a fee of €80m for Saúl.”

Where will Saul Niguez be heading next season?

Saul Niguez has been one of the most consistent figures for Atletico Madrid over the past few seasons but his importance has declined this season which is why Simeone is looking for an upgrade. And with both Manchester United and Chelsea keen to sign him, the 26-year-old could be playing in the Premier League next season.

The midfielder has five more years left on his current deal which is why Atletico are quoting an €80 million fee for him. But since the two suitors have qualified for Europe next season, paying such a sum should not be a problem.

Chelsea will feel they have the advantage over Man United since they have just won the Champions League but right now, Thomas Tuchel has a lot of midfielders in his squad so Saul Niguez will have to earn his place, should he joins the Blues in the summer.

Man United, on the other hand, need a serious upgrade to Fred and even Nemanja Matic is set to leave so a player like Saul Niguez could very easily become the first-choice central midfielder for the Old Trafford side next season.

Atletico Madrid have no reason to get into a bargain since they have him tied down until 2026 which is why we think there will no discounts on offer. So, if either Man United or Chelsea want to sign Saul they will have to cough up €80 million.
