Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to get rid of Sergio Reguilon before the transfer window shuts down and the full-back’s next destination could be FC Barcelona.
Reguilon does not feature in Ange’s long-term plans and with his contract set to expire in 2025, Spurs are eager to cash in on him this summer so that they do not lose him as a free agent at the end of the 24/25 season.
The left-back might not have found success at Tottenham but several clubs have shown an interest in him, one of which is Barcelona. The Catalans are yet to make any sort of formal approach but according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, the Spanish giants should make an offer before deadline day.
He told the Last Word on Spurs podcast[as quoted by London World]: “Yeah, potentially. I mean, whenever I hear that Barcelona are in for a player it’s always with a pinch of salt. With regards to Reguilon, they will try to do a deal on their terms rather than on Tottenham’s terms.
“Tottenham want to make a sale, that is 100% the case. Can Barcelona purchase him? We know he won’t cost that much, Barcelona will be well aware that he is a player Tottenham want to sell.”
Do Barca need a player like Sergio Reguilon?
Sergio Reguilon is a product of Real Madrid’s academy and at one point, the left-back was a very promising talent in the La Liga. However, his career did not take off with Los Blancos and even his move to the Premier League has not been a success.
He has been in England for four years but the 27-year-old has played only 77 league games. Last season, he was sent out on loan to Manchester United and Brentford. During the 23/24 campaign, he had an xA of 2.89 but could only manage four assists in 28 appearances.
Reguilon’s career graph has been on a steady decline and under normal circumstances, he will not be a great addition to Barcelona’s squad. However, Balde is currently the only recognised left-back in the squad so it won’t hurt to sign a backup for the 20-year-old.
Barcelona will be able to sign the Spurs full-back for around €20 million and at that price range, Sergio Reguilon will be a pretty decent addition. The 27-year-old will definitely not be a regular starter under Hansi Flick but his experience will be a big help whenever the manager wants to shut shop.
The Spanish giants have freed up a major part of their wage bills by offloading players like Gundogan, Roque and Mikail Faye and this means they now have room to bring in a couple of new signings before deadline day. They have been able to register Dani Olmo and the experts believe Flick will see the arrival of a few more players in the next few days.
Signing a new left-winger is still a priority for Barcelona but since Spurs are not demanding an absurd transfer fee for Sergio Reguilon, Deco could make a formal offer before the end of this month.
