Arsenal went agonisingly close to signing Monaco winger Thomas Lemar this summer but the deal collapsed in the very last minute because the French International did not want to move to Arsenal.

But now a statement from Monaco vice-president, Vadim Vasilyev has shed new light on this matter. As per Vasilyev, the 21-year-old was eager to move to the Premier League but in the end stayed back at the club simply because there was not enough time to complete the deal. But he has also stated that a move out of Monaco is quite possibly on the cards – maybe this January or at the end of the season.

Vasilyev said, “He wanted to go to the Premier League and I had a few discussions with him and I said ‘stay, stay, stay’ but, of course, when the offers were very, very high, higher than we initially expected then we had to talk, to discuss, but in the end we were very happy.”

He also mentioned the Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were also interested in signing Lemar but in reality, it was Arsenal who came close to signing the player.

A few recent reports suggest that both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have shown a keen interest in signing the player which means that next summer it could be a four-horse race between these Premier League clubs in order to sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco.
