Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has been tipped to move out on loan for the 2022-22 season and it seems like that youngster has already decided on his next destination.

A series of Premier League sides as well as his former side Rangers FC were interested in signing him on a loan deal but the latest entrant to the list, Norwich City seem to have won the race.

According to Sky Sports, Billy Gilmour has agreed to join the Canaries and the deal is set to be finalised later this week.

Lyall Thomas claims: “Norwich are closing in on the signing of Billy Gilmour on loan from Chelsea.

“The Scotland midfielder has agreed to join the Canaries for the 2021-22 season, and is expected to undergo a medical following his Covid-19 quarantine later this week.

“Chelsea are open to the idea of Gilmour going out on loan to play regularly next season but they see his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.”

Should Chelsea stop Billy Gilmour from moving out?

In that same article, Sky Sports also quotes Graeme Souness who has urged Billy Gilmour not to head out on loan but rather stay at Chelsea and sharpen his skills.

Souness told Sky Sports News: “I’d personally keep him at Chelsea. I think Jorginho has to be looking over his shoulder. He’ll be challenging him more than anyone else. I look at Phil Foden at City and Pep didn’t let him go out on loan.

“I look back on my own career and think how did I improve – there was no words of wisdom, no sentence any coach said to me, there was no watershed moment in my career where I turned a corner.

“What made me better, I was 23, went to Liverpool, arguably the best team in the world – certainly the best team in Europe – and I was playing with fabulous players in training every single day.

“I learnt to think quicker, to improve my touch, move the ball quicker and just being around winners – Chelsea have got bundles of them – that will improve him more than playing in a lesser team where it’s a battle every week. That’s how I see it, Phil Foden is an argument for that.”

We can understand what Souness is saying but a talent like Billy Gilmour needs to be playing at the top level day in and day out but there’s no way he will be getting that opportunity at Chelsea next season.

Tuchel already has players like Kovacic, Kante and Jorginho and some rumours claim they could try and bring in another midfielder this summer.

There’s no point in training with the best in the world unless you can put it to good use on the pitch during competitive matches. So the ideal thing for the youngster to do will be to join another club and play regular first-team football.

For Norwich City, this will be a wonderful signing as they are preparing a return to the Premier League.
