Chelsea signed Kai Havertz for a staggering £72 million during the summer but the German has turned out to be a major disappointment so far in the English top flight.

During the 2020-21 season, the 21-year-old has featured in 14 Premier League games for the Blues, managing to score just one and assist two goals.

Over the past couple of games, Lampard has chosen to drop Kai Havertz to the bench due to his poor form and according to SportBILD journalist Raymond Hinko, the attacking midfielder was actually better off joining Bayern Munich instead of moving to England.

“Kai Havertz, even if he doesn’t say it out loud, will have already cursed a hundred times that he moved from Leverkusen to the midfield bores of Chelsea, following the lure of money,” he wrote for BILD.

“Everything went to pieces. No celebrating Christmas, far away from his family, trapped on the island, not even strumming a few contemplative songs on his piano.

“Instead, watching from the draughty bench against bottom-of-the-table Arsenal in a 3-1 defeat. Then substituted for the last quarter of an hour.

“A kind of mercy killing. The maximum punishment for such a great talent.

“Havertz will have kicked himself often enough for not returning Bayern’s interest more vehemently as long as coach Hansi Flick was still interested in him.”

Havertz had scored 12 goals and assisted another six last season in the Bundesliga which is why his form this campaign has been a shock to many pundits.

Not only is he not scoring and assisting goals but overall he’s having no major impact on the games which is why the manager has been left with no other option but to push him down the pecking order.

There’s no denying the 21-year-old has an abundance of talent and will come good if Lampard remains patient with him for the next couple of months.

But that is easier said than done since Chelsea paid an enormous amount of money to sign Kai Havertz and right now with so many teams pushing for the league title, the Blues just do not have time to sit around and nurture an unpolished gem.

As far as joining Bayern Munich is concerned, Havertz would have been warming the benches this season had he chosen to make a move to Hansi Flick’s side.
