Premier League side Man United want to sign a new central defender this summer and they might be trying to launch a bid for Juventus’ Cristian Romero, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

United want a long-term partner for Harry Maguire which is why they have been linked with a lot of centre-backs in the past few weeks. And now, it seems like Ole is ready to pay a £39 million transfer fee to sign the 23-year-old.

They cite Calciomercato saying: “As announced by the prestigious Italian portal CalcioMercato, Manchester United is preparing an offer of 39 million pounds to acquire the services of Cristian Romero, defender of Juventus from Turin and who comes from playing on loan at Atalanta in Bergamo last season.

“But, as reported by CalcioMercato, the possibility of obtaining a good amount of money so quickly would be significant, so they would be interested in the proposal that Manchester United is preparing to take over Romero’s services.”

Should Man United be playing £39m for Cristian Romero?

Cristian Romero joined Atalanta on a two-year loan deal from Juventus last summer and during the 2020-21 season, the 23-year-old has turned into one of the best defenders in Serie A.

In the recently concluded campaign, Cristian Romero played in 31 league matches, chipping in with two goals and three assists.

TransferMarkt currently values him at £27 million and since he has a contract with Juventus until 2025, £39 million seems to be a pretty good offer for the centre-back.

The Argentine international is not the only defender who is being eyed by Man United as the English side have also been linked with players like Raphael Varane, Jules Kounde and Pau Torres. But at such a price tag, he could very well be the cheapest option available to Solskjaer.

Atalanta have a £21.5million option to buy in their loan deal which they could exercise this summer given how well Romero has performed. But with Manchester United ready to pay £39 million, we doubt if Juventus will be ready to lose out on the excess cash and on top of that let him stay in the same league as them.
