Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a series of top European managers but according to Alex McLeish, either Graham Potter or Roberto Martinez should take up the job.
Daniel Levy has already seen talks fail with high-profile managers like Antonio Conte and Paulo Fonseca but the names of Martinez and Potter has been doing the rounds for some time now.
And as per McLeish, a lot of the bigger managers will be a bit hesitant to take up the job which is why someone like Roberto Martinez or Graham Potter could be the ideal choice.
“I’m sure there’ll be some precocious young coach who will eventually take the job,” the former Scotland manager told Football Insider.
“A lot of top coaches will be thinking am I going to get the money? Am I going to be able to improve it?
“As a coach, you can’t walk in and say: ‘I’m going to turn these players into a championship-winning team without adding to the quality.
“That will be the key for the major coaches. Do they take a chance on a good, young coach? I’ve heard from people I know Graham Potter’s name was mentioned a few times and (Roberto) Martinez also.
“I would have thought that those guys, maybe a coach of those two’s magnitude, would be the correct choice for Spurs.”
The name of Roberto Martinez has been associated with Tottenham since the very first day that Jose Mourinho was sacked by the club. And late last month, The Athletic had claimed that Brighton boss Graham Potter was also on Daniel Levy’s radar.
This whole situation is turning into a mess and with the new season fast approaching, Spurs are running out of time to appoint a new permanent boss.
Ideally, any new manager will need time to set up shop and given the dire state that the club is in right now, Gabby Agbonlahor has stated that Tottenham should hand the job to Ryan Mason.
He said: “It’s just a shambles there at the moment, if I was them I’d probably just give it to Ryan Mason. There’s that many candidates that have turned them down…
“Pre-season starts in about a week so they’re probably going to have to give it to somebody else.

“It’s such a shame it’s come to this for Spurs and their fans. They need to sort something out, for sure.”
A lot of the big Premier League clubs have appointed their ex-players as their permanent boss in the past few years but there’s no way Ryan Mason is qualified to take up a permanent job in the dugout and then go on to compete with teams like Manchester City and Liverpool.
But, having said all this, the way managers are rejecting Tottenham Hotspur, Levy might have no other option but to hand over the baton to Mason, at least for the 2021/22 season.
