Before Saturday’s Premier League game vs Sheffield United, Spurs were seventh on the league table and this position could be more than enough to play in Europe next season.

Traditionally the top-four league sides go and play in the Champions League while the fifth-placed club plays in the Europa League along with the FA Cup winner. But as Football London revealed a few weeks ago, the announcement of the UEFA Europa Conference League could make things a bit more complicated.

Football London had explained last month: “The newest UEFA tournament is the Europa Conference League and before a ball was kicked this season qualification was simple. The winners of the League Cup have a spot in the UECL.

“With the final set to take place on April 25th, we already know that either Spurs or Manchester City will lift the trophy.

“However, if Spurs or Manchester City finish in a European spot via the Premier League, their UECL place drops to the next eligible team in the Premier League.”

Now Manchester City have not only won the EFL Cup but they have also secured a place in Europe via the league table so now the UECL place drops to the next eligible team in the Premier League.

So as long as the EFL Cup and FA Cup winners can both finish in the top five, a seventh-place finish in the Premier League should be enough to book a spot in the Europa Conference League.

As things stand, Spurs are the favourites to finish in that specified spot but Everton are breathing down their necks having just a point less than the North London side.

Everton could have gone above Spurs had they beaten Aston Villa but now Carlo Ancelotti’s side will have to wait for Ryan Mason’s side to falter in their remaining few matches while picking up maximum points from their own games.

The FA Cup final will be played between Chelsea and Leicester City, both of whom are going to finish in the top five so a seventh-place finish will be enough to secure a spot in the Europa Conference League.
