Rafa Benitez left Newcastle United to head to the Chinese Super League and the Magpies have now named Steve Bruce as his successor.

Steve Bruce held talks with NUFC last weekend and on Monday he resigned as Sheffield Wednesday boss.

The club released an official statement announcing the appointment.

“Newcastle United can now announce that Steve Bruce has been appointed as the club’s new head coach. The 58-year-old, who was born in Corbridge, Northumberland and raised in Wallsend, returns to Tyneside after signing an initial three-year contract and will be joined at St. James’ Park by coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence.” the statement read.

The 58-year-old is a boyhood Newcastle United fan so obviously, he is excited to take charge of the club.

“There is a huge challenge ahead of us, but it’s one that my staff and I are ready for,” said Bruce. “This is my boyhood club and it was my dad’s club, so this is a very special moment for me and my family.”

Some fans though fear that much like Rafa Benitez, Steven Bruce too will be dominated and controlled by Mike Ashley. But the former Sunderland boss has made it clear that he is not a “puppet”.

Bruce said: “Make no mistake – it’s going to be difficult. I’m under no illusions. My eyes are wide open to it.

“I’ve got big boots to fill, but I’m delighted to be given the opportunity. I couldn’t really refuse the opportunity.

“Alan’s a big, big friend of mine, and he’s welcome to his opinions. I understand the challenge that lays ahead.

“I’m not everybody’s cup of tea and I’m not Rafa Benitez. However, I’m confident enough in my experience, and the people I’ve brought in, that we can continue to take the club forward.

Am I in charge of transfers or am I a puppet? That won’t happen, of course. That’s the sort of thing I’m referring to.”

Sheffield Wednesday though are not particularly pleased with the way Steve Bruce has chosen to head to Newcastle United and now they are seeking legal advice in order to settle the compensation.
