Man United have reclaimed the top spot on the EPL table after beating Fulham away from home on Wednesday but according to Rio Ferdinand, his former side cannot afford to take a breather.
Leicester and then Manchester City were at the top of the table on the very same day before Man United won 2-1 at Craven Cottage and Ferdinand thinks the 2020-21 EPL title race is to be fought amongst as many as six clubs.
Ferdinand said, as quoted by MEN: “If you look at the league, you’ve got Man United, Man City, Tottenham (plus Liverpool and Leicester)… I think down to Everton. You can’t discount Everton playing a part in this because of the manager.
“Ancelotti knows what it takes to win a league. He’s got a very good team there, the squad depth probably isn’t what he would like but I think you’ve got to look at down to Everton.”
Chelsea and Southampton are currently tied on points on the eighth and ninth spot respectively meaning at least on paper, they have a very big chance of challenging for the Premier League title.
Teams like Everton and Spurs will look to up their form during the second half of the season but we have a feeling that Manchester City will be the team who will be able to break away from the pack during the coming weeks.
Pep Guardiola’s side are beginning to find their old form and are currently second on the EPL table, having played one game less.
So, if City can win their game-in-hand then they move to the top of the table and teams like Man United and Liverpool will have to play catch up.
Leicester City have also been in fine form so far but we can see them crumbling in the coming months.
And as far as Chelsea are concerned, Frank Lampard will first need to sort out his own future at the club before he can think of taking a shot at the EPL title.
Overall, during the first half of 2020-21 season, almost all the teams have been highly inconsistent which is why we’re seeing such an open title race so any team who can get their act together for the rest of the campaign is likely to lift the trophy in May.
