EPL Pemier League England
English Premier League

Earlier today there were reports that the Premier League season could resume on June 12 but now that date could well be brought forward.

For the past couple of weeks, the EPL authorities have been trying really hard to restart the 2019-20 season but they have since been waiting for the green light from the government. And now the United Kingdom government has come out with a document in which they have explained in details as to how they plan to lift the enforced lockdown.

In this 50-page document, the government has explained the various rules that will be put in place once the lockdown is lifted which in turn has hinted that the Premier League could return back to action as early as June 1.

In Step Three of the document titled ‘Our Plan to Rebuild: The UK Government’s COVID-19 recovery strategy‘, it’s explained: “The ambition at this step is to open at least some of the remaining businesses and premises that have been required to close, including personal care (such as hairdressers and beauty salons) hospitality (such as food service providers, pubs and accommodation), public places (such as places of worship) and leisure facilities (like cinemas). They should also meet the COVID-19 Secure guidelines.

“Some venues which are, by design, crowded and where it may prove difficult to enact distancing may still not be able to reopen safely at this point or may be able to open safely only in part.

“Nevertheless, the Government will wish to open as many businesses and public places as the data and information at the time allows.

“In order to facilitate the fastest possible reopening of these types of higher-risk businesses and public places, the Government will carefully phase and pilot reopenings to test their ability to adopt the new Covid-19 secure guidelines.

“The Government will also monitor carefully the effects of reopening other similar establishments elsewhere in the world, as this happens. The Government will establish a series of task forces to work closely with stakeholders in these sectors to develop ways in which they can make these businesses and public places Covid-19 secure.”

This is great news for all the football fans but the Government has also made it clear that if they fear the disease is spreading again they will waste no time in putting their foot down and establishing restrictions on once again.

The document warns: “If the data suggests the virus is spreading again, the Government will have to tighten restrictions, possibly at short notice. The aim is to avoid this by moving gradually and by monitoring carefully the effect of each step the Government takes.

“The scientific advice is clear that there is scope to go backwards; as restrictions are relaxed, if people do not stay alert and diligently apply those still in place, transmissions could increase and restrictions would need to be re-imposed.”

When will the Premier League resume?

The UK government is certainly ready to get things back on track at the start of next month but we do not think the Premier League will be able to work with this date since most of the teams are yet to report back to training.

While teams in Germany, Italy and Spain have called their players back to training, the Premier League sides are still waiting to make that move.

Also before the players can get back to the ground they will first have to be tested which will take a number of more days.

And if this was not hindrance enough, the authorities are yet to finalise ‘Project Restart’ under which they have to decide a lot of things like playing the matches in neutral venues along with the schedule of the remaining 92 games.

So while the other entertainment and sporting events might look to reopen their door on the very first day, the Premier League should still be working with June 12th as their possible resumption.
