Premier League

Right now the Premier League is suspended indefinitely due to the spread of the disease and there are growing fears that the 2019-20 season might not be completed after all.

Initially, everyone thought this current arrangement was only for a couple of weeks and everything will go back to normal pretty soon. But clearly that has not been the case since the pandemic has no signs of slowing down.

And now pundit Gary Neville has admitted that doubts are beginning to creep in as to whether the 2019-20 season can be finished or not.

“Where we were five or six weeks ago when we weren’t doing shows virtually, I was 99 per cent confident about football being completed this season and I was confident about all competitions, whether it be behind closed doors or in other circumstances,” he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

“That’s having been part of the League Two owners’ discussions over the last few weeks, seeing the complexities and seeing the challenges that the PFA have got with contracts.

“Also, seeing the issues of starting behind closed doors and then a player gets it again and they have to go into quarantine again and the challenges that exist with fans travelling to potentially Istanbul. Our fans are so loyal they will try and get there somehow.

“The reality of it is I am a lot less confident of football finishing [the season] than I was five or six weeks ago, now we are getting to the crux of the matter and these types of decisions are having to be made.”

Will the Premier League season be abandoned?

Neville is not the only person who is being a pessimist right now but clearly the Premier League clubs are ready to fight till the last breath.

In a recent meeting, almost all the Premier League clubs had shown interest in finish the remaining games and had also put forward various options via which the matches can be wrapped up.

And as per a report in the Sky Sports, the authorities are looking at June 8 as the tentative date when they plan to resume the matches.

But the management has made it clear that all these matches will be played behind closed doors and after the permission from the concerned authorities.

The Premier League will suffer a major financial blow if they cannot finish the whole 2019-20 season but right now they are not looking to take any rash decisions which could boomerang back in the next couple of weeks.
