Tuchel lends support to this player despite him misfiring against Liverpool: Here’s why

Chelsea beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Thursday but if forward Timo Werner was a bit more clinical then the Blues could have scored a few more.

Timo Werner put the ball into the back of the net in the first half, only to be adjudged offside by VAR and over the course of time, he had a few chances to set the record straight. Eventually, the German had another goalless match and it was a brilliant strike from Mason Mount that helped Chelsea picked up their 13th win in this Premier League season.

Some pundits were once again critical of Werner’s performance at Anfield but it seems like Thomas Tuchel is not too worried.

The Chelsea boss said after the match, as reported by Goal: “I demand 100 per cent in every training session, I don’t allow self-pity.

“Timo is full of talent and plays for one of the best clubs in the world, in one of the best leagues in the world. So there is no need for him to worry too much if he puts in the effort, puts himself in a state of mind to play on the highest level.

“We are not counting the minutes [to goals] and for me and my approach it is not an issue.”

This season, Timo Werner has played in games in the 26 Premier League but has managed to score just 5 goals. And while he did fire blanks vs Liverpool as well, but the German ran his socks off throughout the match and caused a lot of headaches for Liverpool’s backline.

He used his pace to run into empty spaces on the pitch and this helped players like Kante and Mason Mount to play a lot more freely in and around the final third.

Given that Timo Werner is an out and out goalscorer, he will at some point in time have to start scoring regularly. But right now, it looks like Thomas Tuchel is more than content with the hard work that he is putting out there on the pitch.
