Chelsea knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League winning the second leg 2-0, thanks to goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount.

Timo Werner had missed an easy goalscoring chance in the first leg but the German international redeemed himself by scoring the opener for the Blues this week, thereby giving the Premier League side something to hang onto.

The forward was supposed to be the marquee player for Chelsea this season but so far, he’s been really underwhelming, netting just 12 goals across all competitions. But his second leg performance vs Real Madrid was enough to draw praise from pundit Rio Ferdinand.

“It was a huge goal,” Ferdinand said, as reported. “He has been under pressure, under scrutiny and under the spotlight but he doesn’t seem fazed.

“Yes he has been missing chances but he is in the positions to score the goals and he has already shown he knows where the back of he net is.

“The manager has given him confidence and the confidence comes from being picked every week.

“When Chelsea’s front players win it, with the possible exception of Olivier Giroud, their intent is to really hurt the opposition immediately. They go direct. It’s a trigger. From there on it’s blue bullets going forward.”

Timo Werner had scored 95 goals in 159 games for RB Leipzig but he’s not even gotten close to that form here at Chelsea. And under Frank Lampard, it was certain the forward had no future at the club.

But ever since Thomas Tuchel has taken charge of the club, Werner has been blessed with a second chance and so far he’s done pretty well to impress his new boss. Yes, he’s not finding the back of the net on a regular basis but the system used by Tuchel helps Timo Werner play a supporting role also(13 assists across all competitions so far), thereby taking a lot of the goalscoring burden off his shoulders.

Going by his form, Timo Werner should be getting a start vs Manchester City this weekend in the Premier League but since Thomas Tuchel has a habit of rotating his players, the German might very well be on the bench this Saturday.
