Top 10 overhyped transfers during the Summer window

The summer of 2017 saw some crazy deals being wrapped up. It could easily go down as one of the most unpredicted transfer windows of all times. The transfer record was shattered, a lot of controversial exchanges took place and we’re left with plenty of talking points. Now that the dust has settled, let’s look at 10 overvalued player who found new clubs in the transfer window.

  • Neymar – Barcelona to PSG – £222 million

Let’s be honest, he isn’t worth that much. While he was massively in Leo Messi’s shadow at Barcelona, he was still a guaranteed starter at the club. He has won everything he possibly could at Barcelona, and probably did feel like he wanted a new challenge. While the player and the move is satisfactory, the transfer fee is too high, even for a player of Neymar’s calibre. That money would mean nothing if he doesn’t lead PSG to a Champions League title.

  • Kylian Mbappe – Monaco to PSG (On loan with option to buy. Worth – £180 million)

Mbappe could well turn out to be the greatest find in the history of World Football in a few years’ time, but you just cannot pay that much money for a player so young. It remains to be seen if the repercussions of the transfer will have any sort of effect on his form, but spending that much money for an 18-year-old is nothing short of madness.

  • Kyle Walker – Tottenham to Manchester City – £50 million

Manchester City have shelled out £50 million for a speed demon who cannot cross a football. His passing too is highly questionable and his defensive abilities desert him from time to time, not the kind of player Pep is used to. Perhaps he could feature in another top 10 list at the end of the season, one with the most disappointing signings of 2017/18.

  • Danny Drinkwater – Leicester City to Chelsea – £35 million

Danny Drinkwater’s deadline day signing for Chelsea raised quite a few eyebrows. While he was stagnating at Leicester, is he the right fit for Chelsea? He is a midfielder with an eye for a pass. But he is used to being employed in a system where he has strikers playing on the shoulders of the defenders. At Chelsea, they already have Fabregas as the inventive midfielder, followed by muscle in Bakayoko and Kante. He might provide a decent back-up, but for £35 million? Not good transfer business by any means.

  • Alvaro Morata – Real Madrid to Chelsea – £58 million

His inclusion may be surprising. But his transfer fee is too high, considering the fact that he was, and would have been a bit part player at Real Madrid had he stayed. He is a talented lad, but not worth that amount of money.

  • Victor Lindelof – Benfica to Manchester United – £32 million

Manchester United signed Swedish International, Victor Lindelof from Benfica for a transfer fee of around £32 million. Having seen glimpses of him in pre-season, he looked timid on the ball and made a lot of positional errors, showing he’s far from a finished product. Though he’s just 23 years old and has a lot to learn, his transfer fee is overhyped for someone as inexperienced as Victor. He just played 48 games of first team football and that is too less for a player worth that much.

  • Davison Sanchez – Ajax to Tottenham – £45 million

There is no denying the talent in the boy. But Tottenham have shelled out a club record £45 million on Sanchez when they clearly have a strong central defensive partnership of Alderweirald and Vertonghen. Why spend so much when it seems tough to see how Sanchez can break that highly experienced defensive partnership?

  • Alex Oxlade Chamberlain – Arsenal to Liverpool – £35 million

The question one can ask here is, is Oxlade Chamberlain really a central midfielder? He is a wide-man by his traits, but with the front three that Liverpool possesses, he can forget about trying to make his mark there. Instead, Liverpool have signed promise for £35 million.

  • Marko Arnautovic – Stoke City to West Ham – £24 million

Marko Arnautovic is a strange case. He can exhilarate with his skill and pull a rabbit out of the hat or can frustrate massively. Sadly, for the Austrian, the frequency of the latter is much more. Three games into the season and West Ham sit rock bottom. Arnautovic has a red card to his name and has reportedly fallen out with Bilic so early on in his Hammers career.

  • Pablo Zabaleta – Manchester City to West Ham – Free Transfer

This post is not to disrespect a City legend. He was there with the Citizens throughout their meteoric rise and left when he had nothing more to offer. The position he plays is Right Back. The position demands of the players to be quick of the block, agile and two footed. Zabaleta, at the age of 32, is past it. For West Ham, who go into the new season with a renewed hope and vigour, this signing doesn’t match their ambition.
