Young Rasmus Hojlund has not been able to pick up pace this season which is why Manchester United are now planning to add depth to that department and the names of Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko are at the top of the club’s wishlist.
According to an exclusive report by Stretty News, Man United want to add at least one striker to their ranks during the summer window and they are now targeting to of Europe’s best candidates.
Gyokeres and Sesko have been on fire for their respective clubs this season with the former scoring 41 goals in 48 games for Sporting while Benjamin Sesko has banged in 13 goals in 20 league games for RB Leipzig. However, if Man United are serious about signing either one of them they will have to invest their sweat and blood because Arsenal and also Chelsea are interested in both these strikers.
Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko: Who is more likely to land up at Old Trafford next season?
Viktor Gyokeres is undoubtedly the best amongst the two because he has been scoring at free will for Sporting and currently, the Swede has an xG of 21.58. He has scored 27 league goals from just 55 shots on target and apart from finding the back of the net regularly, he has also provided 10 league assists.
However, the 25-year-old is not likely to join Manchester United for two main reasons.
Firstly, Viktor Gyokeres has a release clause of €100 million and United will not want to spend so much on a new striker because they have already invested heavily in Rasmus Hojlund.
Secondly, Gyokeres, after the season he has had, will want to play in the Champions League but United are not going to be in the top tier of European football next season. Right now, Arsenal are said to be leading the race to sign the Sporting centre-forward and if the Gunners can win the Premier League, neither United nor Chelsea will be able to get their hands on the 25-year-old.
Benjamin Sesko looks a much more realistic target for Manchester United because the manager wants to bring in someone who can share Hojlund’s goalscoring load and the 20-year-old is the ideal candidate for that. He has started only 16 league games this season so he can adjust as the backup striker and play in tandem with Rasmus Hojlund.
Benjamin Sesko also has a release clause but unlike Viktor Gyokeres, the Slovenian international’s clause is only €65 million which is very much within Manchester United’s reach.
Chelsea have been keeping tabs on Sesko as well but Pochettino needs a proper frontman and the Blues are said to be more interested in players like Victor Osimhen and Alexander Isak. They will probably only move for Benjamin Sesko if they miss out on their top priorities.
Signing a new striker who can play alongside Rasmus Hojlund is definitely a requirement but we believe there are far greater problems that need to be solved in the summer. Firstly, Manchester United will need to bring in at least two central midfielders and then the manager will also need defensive reinforcements because Varane, Maguire, Lindelof and Evans are all going to leave at the end of this season. The Red Devils will be working on a tighter budget because they will not be in the Champions League so only if they have funds left, should the owners go for a new centre-forward like Viktor Gyokeres or Sesko.
