Liverpool brought in Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton during the January transfer window of 2018. And the Reds had to shell out 75 million pounds in the form of transfer fee in order to sign the Dutch centre-back.

This was obviously a huge sum of money for a defender so naturally, the Reds had to face a lot of criticism regarding the transfer of Virgil Van Dijk.

A large number of pundits had claimed that Liverpool had overpaid for the defender and also predicted the former Celtic man to fail miserably under pressure.

But we can now safely say that this has not been the case.

Virgil Van Dijk was easily the best defender in the Premier League and arguably he would also top that list in the whole of Europe.

During the 2018-19 season, the Dutch fortress was unpenetrable and not a single player could get dribble past him.

Virgil Van Dijk also managed to lift the Champions League at the end of the season which now means that he has a pretty decent chance to win the Ballon d’Or this time around.

If this happens then he would be the first defender since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 to win the coveted prize. But he has pretty clearly said that winning trophies with Liverpool next season is a much more important task.

“If people are talking about it – you can’t say it doesn’t [excite you],” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

“But it’s a subject we don’t have any influence on. I can’t change anything right now other than get fit, stay fit and that’s the situation.

“Winning something like that is a dream come true for every footballer in the world.

“If you don’t then you just get on with it and try to perform better than last year.

“It would be fantastic and I would be very proud. But the main thing will be to focus on what we do all together and achieving the bigger goal – that’s getting silverware with the club.”
