David Moyes sends out a sharp warning to his players right after their famous European win

West Ham United picked up a massive win over Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday but David Moyes has been quick to warn his players that the triumph shouldn’t get into their heads.

The Hammers won the 2nd leg of the tie 3-0, thereby securing a semi-final spot in the tournament and next up, they take on Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday. Moyes has urged his players not to let their guard down this weekend because many of them will still be rejoicing their UEL win.

He said, as quoted: “There is potential (for distraction) but we plan (for it) not to if we can. We will get focused on the next game.

“The league is really important for us and we have to try to hang in there in the European places if we can.

“Whatever way you deal with the European games, you have to deal with it. The big clubs do and get results, so we will do the same.

“We’ve done pretty well this year considering the Thursday-Sunday games, which is not an ideal situation. Hopefully, we can prepare as well as we possibly can.

“We want to use the highs for the players to recognise just how good it can be. We want to be in this place. We want them to be positive and confident with our actions on the pitch.

“We want to take it into the game on Sunday, take the confidence we got from the game, and we want to try and play as well as we did last night.

“All those things, hopefully, the players will use to their advantage.”

This is the first time in 46 years that West Ham United have managed to reach a European semi-final so the celebrations are bound to be lavish and prolonged but there’s still a lot of work to be done because the players still need to try and secure a Champions League for the upcoming season.

A top-four finish looks very unlikely for the Hammers right now but they need to keep picking up wins because on paper they are very much in the race.

Getting into the Champions League via winning the UEL is also a viable option for them at the moment but reaching the final and then lifting the trophy will not be a walk in the park.

The Hammers take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the semis and the German side have just knocked out Barcelona to reach that position so West Ham United will have their hands full.

Also, after the Burnley game, West Ham have to face Chelsea and then they move back into Europe so they will need to pick up all three points this weekend just to make sure that even a loss vs Chelsea doesn’t do them too much damage. Also, the last thing David Moyes will want is to go into a European semi-final at the back of consecutive league defeats.
