Portuguese newspaper Record are reporting that Premier League side West Ham United have gotten in touch with Benfica over the possible signing of midfielder Julian Weigl.

Julian Weigl joined Benfica from Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and as per the rumours, Benfica are ready to cash in on the midfielder as he has only two years left on his current contract.

He’s played over 100 games for the Portuguese side but the club is ready to accept around £12.5 million for the defensive midfielder. Moyes is actively searching for a midfielder so the manager’s interest in the 26-year-old seems very genuine.

Should West Ham United gamble on Julain Weigl?

Julian Weigl played 171 games for Borussia Dortmund before joining Benfica so he’s a player with bags of experience. He was a first-team regular at BVB for three consecutive seasons before his importance started dwindling.

His price tag might suggest that he’s almost a finished player but someone like him can really help the Hammers get back into the Europa League or even the Champions League.

West Ham United have also made a move for Lille Amadou Onana, a player who’s valued at around £50 million but any day Weigl will be a better signing than the 20-year-old.

However, Eintracht Frankfurt is also interested in the Benfica man so West Ham United will have to really sweat it out if they wish to bring Weigl on board in this month.

Tomas Soucek isn’t going anywhere and even Declan Rice is staying at the club so it makes no sense to spend £50 million on a relatively inexperienced Onana. The Irons would much rather save most of that money and bring in Julian Weigl and use him in tandem with the two primary central midfielders.
