Didier Drogba's advice to Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku scored 2 goals in Belgium’s 5-2 victory over Tunisia and with that the Manchester United striker became the joint top scorer in the World Cup alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Belgium striker has been in fine form during the first two games and now former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has claimed that his advice is the reason why Lukaku has managed to perform so well.

Talking on BBC’s World Cup show, Didier Drogba said that he had told Romelu Lukaku to play the game with a ‘tennis player’ technique.

Drogba then went onto to explain what exactly a ‘tennis player’ technique was.

He said: ‘We are talking about Lukaku being able to change the angle of his runs and create his own space to be able to shoot.

‘That’s exactly what he did there. Attracting the defender one way and then going the other way,’ said Drogba of Lukaku’s first goal on BBC.

‘And then he did something that I really like and I spoke with him a lot about that. The short steps before kicking the ball, just like a tennis player.

‘They do short steps and then hit it, and this is giving you more accuracy and it’s easier to hit the target like that.’

Drogba then went onto add that Romelu Lukaku has been taking advice from a number of big stars which includes current Belgium assistant coach Thiery Henry.

‘Yeah, he’s someone who wants to learn and I’m really happy to give him advice. I think he’s taking advice from everyone now, obviously, he’s with Thierry Henry, so he’s learning from him. When you want to be the best you have to learn from “the best”.’ he added.
