Up until now, all the EPL clubs were indulging in phase one training which started last week meaning the squad members can only work in small groups.

But as per the authorities, the teams can now finally move onto Phase Two training which involves working in bigger groups as well as contact training.

The EPL clubs held a vote on Wednesday where all the teams have unanimously approved the return of contact training which is a massive step towards the resumption of the 2019-20 season.

This meeting was held to discuss the United Kingdom government’s guidelines regarding Phase Two training for elite sport in the country.

“Close contact training is required to replicate match formations and conditions so that the sport-specific demands can be placed on the body, mind and senses,” explained a statement on the government’s official website, as reported.

“Close contact training develops the sport-specific fitness which is an essential element for player safety and a reduced risk of injury during competition.

“It is anticipated that engaging in this type of training would start with smaller ‘clusters’ of two-three athletes and eventually progress to larger groups of four-12 athletes, and ultimately full team training, without social distancing possible at all times.”

Earlier today, the EPL released a statement in which they have confirmed that clubs will be able to start contact training.

The official statement read: “Premier League Shareholders today voted unanimously to resume contact training, marking another step towards restarting the Premier League season, when safe to do so.

“Squads are now able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimising any unnecessary close contact.

“The Premier League’s priority is the health and wellbeing of all participants.

“Strict medical protocols are in place to ensure the training ground is the safest environment possible and players and staff will continue to be tested for COVID-19 twice a week.

“Stage Two of the Return to Training protocol has been agreed following consultation with clubs, players, managers, the PFA, LMA and the Government. Discussions are ongoing as work continues towards resuming the season when conditions allow.”

This is a massive step towards finishing the remaining 92 matches in the league but despite this move into Phase Two there’s still doubt if the EPL can stick to its original resumption date of June 12.
