Premier League side Arsenal are planning to make a move to sign 23-year-old defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach, as per a report by Le10Sport.

The report claims: “At 23, this nugget of Swiss football begins to make a pretty name in the Bundesliga. And with a contract ending in June 2021, in a short year, his case becomes a great opportunity for the next summer transfer window.

“And according to our information, two European clubs are clearly starting to look into the matter. They are Bayern Munich in Germany and Arsenal in England.”

Nico Elvedi joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2015 for a transfer fee of around €4 million and this season, the 23-year-old has featured in 25 Bundesliga matches as a result of which he’s spiked the interest of a number of top European clubs.

And now even the Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly looking to make a move for him once the 2019-20 season ends.

Can Arsenal get their hands on Nico Elvedi?

Bayern Munich have a long-standing interest in the centre-back but the Gunners are desperate to add a new central defender to their ranks before the next season begins which is why the North London outfit might go all out to pull this deal through.

But there are a few reasons why Arsenal might not be able to get their hands on the player.

The first reason is that his current club value Elvedi at around £25million which is something the Gunners would be reluctant to pay since they need to make a number of other signings as well.

Also, if the player is really thinking about moving out in the summer then he would try to join a club where he can play in the Champions League next season. And as things stand, Arsenal cannot guarantee top-level European football just yet.

William Saliba will need a steady partner next season which is why Nico Elvedi is not the only centre-back who is on the radar of Mikel Arteta. The Premier League side are also reportedly looking at Besiktas’ Domagoj Vida.
