Chelsea lost the FA Cup final 2-1 to Arsenal this Saturday at the Wembley Stadium despite the Stamford Bridge outfit taking an early lead in the match.

Christian Pulisic scored the opener in the 5th minute of the match and for the next 10 odd minutes, it looked like the Blues would be cruising to an easy victory.

That though was not to be as Arsenal made a strong comeback thanks to a brace from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and speaking after the game, Cesar Azpilicueta was quick to acknowledge his team’s mistakes.

The Chelsea defender made it clear that they failed to kill the game off despite having numerous chances and that is one of the main reasons why the Gunners could make a revival into the match.

‘It’s painful and a tough one to take,’ said Azpilicueta, as reported by the club’s official website. ‘Obviously, when you lose a final, it’s always painful.

‘When you score an early goal, you have control of the game. ‘We had a couple of chances after that to make it 2-0.

‘It’s a final and we knew that we were playing against a side that have good attacking players and they can be dangerous. After this, we couldn’t get into our game as we wished.’

‘We started the game well and scored an early goal which normally gives a confidence to build on but we didn’t capitalise on it. We dropped our level a little bit and we were punished.

‘We have to look at ourselves. We know two weeks ago when we played against Man United, we really controlled it. We played our game, we were on top of them against a very good side but today we couldn’t do it for 90 minutes and, in the end, that makes the difference.’

Consistency has been one of Chelsea’s biggest issues during the current season as the Blues fans have no idea which avatar of their side will take the field.

Sometimes, Chelsea play some mind-numbing football but then during crucial matches such as these, they fall flat on their face.

Next up, they take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League and Lampard will be hoping for a positive response from his players next weekend in Germany.
