According to a report in Sky Sports, North London side Arsenal could be looking to part ways with centre-back David Luiz after just a single season.
The defender joined the Emirates outfit last summer from Chelsea for a transfer fee of £8 million and according to pundit Jamie Carragher, the Gunners could miss his talents next season.
Carragher told Sky Sports, as reported: “It’s been entertaining. I think that’s the first thing you’d say, maybe that’s not something you’d not want to be described as as a defender. He’s not going to change when he went to Arsenal, no manager is going to change David Luiz.
“He’s had success through his career, he went for big money, he’s got some great qualities.
“I think of him at his best in being in the middle of a back three with [Antonio] Conte in the year they won the title, I think that was the best position for him, I think Conte got the best out of him, we saw the real big strengths of David Luiz.
“We know about him technically, but he is a leader in some senses as well, he’s got a huge frame, he’s a real physical presence as well.
“I think actually being in the middle of that back three with real defenders either side of him, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta, I think really saw the best of him. That’s how I certainly remember him.”
Should David Luiz remain at Arsenal next season?
David Luiz is set to be a free agent in the summer and by the looks of it, the Gunners are not too enthusiastic about offering him a new deal at the club.
This season, the defender has played in 25 Premier League matches and so far he has been quite average in the backline.
But to be honest, Mikel Arteta should try and hold onto the Brazilian for one more season since his other defenders are not in top form either. To make matters worse, the wannabe first-choice centre-backs like Pablo Mari and William Saliba have no experience of playing in England.
As things stand, Arsenal will once again be plying their trade in the Europa League next campaign and David Luiz would be the perfect candidate to lead a second-string side on these Thursday night fixtures.
The 33-year-old knows that no other big Premier League club will look to take him in for the next few seasons, so if Arteta offers him a short-term deal, we don’t think David Luiz will be able to resist it.
