Jose Mourinho Spurs Premier League
Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho as a manager can sometimes be tough to understand.

On one hand, there are players who will willingly sacrifice their life on the pitch for the Portuguese and on the other, there are players who do not endear the man.

One such person is Henrikh Mkhitaryan who recently questioned the United manager’s philosophy at Manchester United and now a report has emerged which will not go down too well with the Manchester United fans.

According to a report in the Independent, during the early stages of the summer transfer window, United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had offered to go after the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar or Gareth Bale as one of the marquee signings of summer.

But the Man United boss said no.

Yes, as shocking as it may sound, Jose Mourinho did not agree on chasing the above-mentioned superstar and wanted to sign a quality centre-back before the new Premier season.

Mourinho felt that signing such a big name made no sense and bringing in a defender was and is his biggest priority.

And this is where Tottenham Hotspur fans should hold onto their seats.

According to the report, Jose Mourinho has targetted Spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld as his biggest priority for the summer transfer window and the manager is willing to go to extreme lengths in order to get the Belgium international to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been chasing Alderweireld for some time now but there have not reached very close to bringing him onboard.

The Premier League transfer window closes on August 9th which means that Jose Mourinho has 10 odd days to sign the centre-back from Tottenham Hotspur.

A number of people think that getting a player like Kylian Mbappe or Neymar would have given Man United that additional spark they needed to play attacking football. But others feel that Jose Mourinho cannot allow his team to play offensive simply because he does not have the defensive framework to support that kind of play.

And if the Premier League runners-up manage to bring in Alderweireld then Jose Mourinho might finally play like most pundits want United to play – attacking.

Having said that, United are not only targetting Toby Alderweireld as Leicester City defender Harry Maguire is also on their radar. But with a wonderful performance during the 2018 World Cup, the Foxes are holding out for a fee which if agreed upon will make Maguire the most expensive defender in world football.
