Luka Modric broke the deadlock of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the UEFA Player of the Year trophy as he was acknowledged as the best male player in Europe during the 2017-18 season.

Modric won a third consecutive Champions League with Real Madrid shortly before guiding Croatia to their maiden World Cup final in Russia.

These achievements were more than enough for him to beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah to the coveted trophy.

But one shocking thing that everyone noticed during the ceremony was the fact that only two out of the three nominees were present as Cristiano Ronaldo chose to give the awards a miss.

And shortly after the winner was announced, Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes lashed out claiming that it was the Portuguese star who deserved to win the award.

Mendes said: “It’s just ridiculous; a disgrace. There is no doubt about the winner, he is the best in his position.”

Ronaldo’s former teammate Sergio Ramos was asked about his views on why the forward did not attend the ceremony to which the Real Madrid defender said:

“I do not think Cristiano is unhappy because Modric won the award.

“Maybe he is unhappy because he did not win it, but not because a teammate did instead. I think if there is one player who deserves this award then it is Luka.”

But now Spanish outlet AS have come out with a report in which they claim that Cristiano Ronaldo knew beforehand that he was not going to win the Player of the Year award which is why he chose not to attend the ceremony.

If this report has any truth in it then it once again outlines the singular attitude that Cristiano Ronaldo has had all throughout his career.

Is he a sore loser or just a passionate winner?
