Man United have officially managed to sign 23-year-old midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax on a five-year deal, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The official statement said: “Manchester United is delighted to confirm the arrival of Donny van de Beek from Ajax. The Dutch midfielder has signed a five-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year.

“The Netherlands international contributed 10 goals and 11 assists in 37 games last season before the Eredivisie was curtailed.”

But now that Man United have signed another attacking midfielder, there has been a buzz in the footballing community about which player amongst Pogba and Fernandes will play in tandem with Donny van de Beek next season.

Some experts have also predicted that it will the new arrival who will play second fiddle to Bruno and Pogba – until he can prove himself in the Premier League.

But Man United legend Gary Neville has tried to explain why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer chose to sign someone like Donny van de Beek and how he can be a regular starter along with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

The pundit told Stadium Astro, via Metro: ‘No, I think he will start. ‘If you look at that area of midfield at United, it does look like they’ve got attacking midfield players in abundance with Pogba, Fernandes and Van de Beek now.

‘But we look at the midfield make-up of teams nowadays, we’re not seeing teams play with too many defensive midfield players.

‘It used to be that you would have defensive midfield players like Claude Makelele or Jordan Henderson or Fabinho at Liverpool – it looks like Manchester United will play Pogba a little bit deeper or maybe even a different system because I’m sure he [Van de Beek] will start.

‘But if you look at modern midfielders now, there is less structure in the teams, less organisation, more fluidity and I think that’s the way that Manchester United are now with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

‘I think he wants players who interchange and move around and they will be very difficult to play against.’
