Man United look all set to miss out on Gareth Bale as the Welsh winger is edging closer to a return to their Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Man United were looking at Bale as the alternative to Jadon Sancho but it seems like Spurs will be able to perform a coup, as confirmed by the player’s agent.

“There’s a long way to go on some issues, but without doubt Gareth is closer to leaving Madrid than at any time in last seven years,” Bale’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, told Sky Sports News.

“The deal is complicated, but there’s reason to believe a deal is close and things could move very quickly if discussions continue to go well.

“Gareth has spoken to Jose and explained how Spurs have a special place in his heart.”

Many pundits think this miss will be a big blow for Solskjaer’s plan for the 2020/21 season since Man United are not likely to get their hands on Jadon Sancho either.

But according to Sky Sports News reporter Alan Myers, the Old Trafford outfit were never really earnestly interested in signing Gareth Bale this summer.

He said: “Once it became apparent that a return to the Premier League was a distinct probability for Gareth Bale it was almost inevitable that Manchester United’s name would be linked with the Real Madrid star.

“Compounding the issue would of course be the impasse over United’s long-running pursuit of Jadon Sancho. But the reality is, while United undoubtedly will have raised an eyebrow to what was happening with Bale, there was no real credible negotiation or dialogue between the two parties.”

Some rumours have claimed that Man United were using Gareth Bale as leverage to force Dortmund into selling Jadon Sancho. But now that the winger is seemingly heading to Spurs, that bargaining chip has also been snatched away from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

So either Man United will have to pay up what BVB have been demanding all along or else they will have to forget about signing Sancho this ongoing transfer window.

But as far as Spurs are concerned, Jose Mourinho might very well have hit the jackpot by bringing in someone like Gareth Bale.
