West Ham United had been trying to bring Jesse Lingard back to the club all throughout the summer but in the end, the midfielder has chosen to remain at Manchester United.

Several rumours have suggested that the Hammers will make a deadline day effort to sign the England international on a permanent deal but David Moyes has missed out on him.

Jesse Lingard had really shone during his loan spell at the London Stadium last season and according to Gary Neville, the 28-year-old might have missed out on a golden opportunity to

“I think Jesse Lingard, I am disappointed that he hasn’t left Manchester United,” Neville told Sky Sports, as quoted.

“He will get a few games. He will get moments on the pitch. And he will contribute.

“But I think he had something going at West Ham last year that meant that Lingard, in his own right, was standing up as a really good player.

“I think to go back in as a squad player is disappointing.

“I think you sometimes need to fire the nest and go. I thought he had already done that, with what he did last year, so I think there are two or three players that won’t get a lot of game time and they should have joined Dan James by furthering their careers and got more football.”

Why did Jesse Lingard not join West Ham United?

Several reasons are floating around as to why Lingard did not return to the London Stadium.

According to The Telegraph, Manchester United were quoting a price of £30 million for the sale of the 28-year-old and the Hammers were not ready to pay such a steep price.

The other major reason being cited for the transfer failure is because Jesse Lingard wanted to remain at Old Trafford for one more season and fight for his place in midfield.

He had such a fine performance with West Ham United last season but still, he did not get an England call-up. But if he can manage to get some minutes in that star-studded Man United midfield, Gareth Southgate might finally take notice of him.
