Scottish side Celtic FC have about to sign ex-Premier League midfielder Aaron Mooy, according to multiple reports in the UK.

The 31-year-old midfielder is going to join the SPFL side as a free agent on a one-year deal with possibly an option to extend it for a further 12 months. Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the transfer is set to be completed sometime this week.

He wrote on Twitter: “Celtic are set to sign Aaron Mooy on free transfer. Full agreement in place, been told contract will be valid until June 2023 with an option to extend for further season.

“Deal will be completed this week after he left Shanghai.”

Will Aaron Mooy turn out to be a good signing for Celtic FC?

As per TransferMarkt, Mooy is currently valued at £4.5 million so it’s a great bit of business signing him as a free agent. Also, Tom Rogic, Nir Bitton and Ismaila Soro all left the club at the end of last season so signing a new central midfielder was the need of the hour.

However, Mooy ended his contract with Shanghai Port in January and since then he’s not played any sort of competitive football.

We don’t think the manager will be able to throw him into the deep end of the pool from the very first matchweek and this could be a major issue for the Bhoys. For a player who’s signing for only a season, the manager will want to use him in each and every matchweek from the start to the end of the campaign.

On the flip side, he’s played more than 125 games in England so he will bring in vast amounts of experience, something which will come real handy in the derby matches as well as in Europe.

Overall, Aaron Mooy is undoubtedly a fine signing for Celtic FC but he will need to get himself back to match fitness as early as possible in order to be of any worth to the club.
