Pundit explains why Man United’s latest target is not likely to succeed in the EPL: Can he prove his doubters wrong?

Adrien Rabiot Juventus

Just one day after losing to Brighton, Manchester United have gone out and agreed on a deal to sign midfielder Adrien Rabiot from Juventus.

According to every media outlet, Man United have reached an agreement with Juventus and now the EPL side needs to sort out personal terms with Rabiot.

United’s midfield was laid bare by Brighton so it’s evident that Erik ten Hag is desperate to bring in a central midfielder as soon as possible. However, Adrien Rabiot is far off from Frenkie de Jong – Man United’s primary midfield target for the summer.

Rabiot has failed to impress in the Serie A so naturally almost every pundit and expert is busy dissecting this transfer. Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has also given his verdict on why the Frenchman could turn out to be a failure at Old Trafford.

“He was at PSG and ran down his contract and went to Juve. He’s not done it there,” he told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

“I’m not sure that’s much of an upgrade on what they’ve got there already.

“What it stinks of is if you are signing him at this time, he’s not your first choice. Maybe your second. It is 24 days to go until the window closes, one game gone, I think you are reacting to things now. That’s when you make mistakes.

“Let’s see if he can deal with the intensity of our game. He’s gone to Juve and not shone there. Italian football for a midfield player is a bit easier than for a player playing in the English game.

“I found it a doddle out there, I’m not saying it’s like that now. A midfielder in those days dropped off to the 18 yard line and would just see what they’ve got.

“You weren’t harassed and you could get your head up and make passes. I know it has changed, they do press a bit higher up the pitch but not all do.

“If he’s found life harder at Juventus with the players they have then coming to English football? I have reservations.”

Will Adrien Rabiot be a success at Man United?

Adrien Rabiot played 218 games for PSG from 2013 to 2019 and he had moved to Juventus with a lot of promise.

As soon as this news broke, everyone has come out to claim that Rabiot is going to be a failure at Man United, just like he has been with Juventus.

However, his three seasons with the Old Lady have actually not been that bad.

Yes, he’s run down his contract and hasn’t lived up to the hype but last season, he started 28 league games for the club and as per Fotmob, he had a rating of 7.17. He did have only two assists but not one expects a central defensive midfielder to make an abundance of attacking contributions.

Man United have been chasing Frenkie de Jong for more than two months but they are still not close to signing the midfielder. They have tried every trick in the book to bring him on board but De Jong is adamant that he doesn’t wish to leave Camp Nou unless his arrears are paid.

In such a scenario, Adrien Rabiot will not be such a bad idea because at least with him in the side, Erik ten Hag can afford to add one more creative midfielder.

Neither Fred nor McTominay have what it takes to play alone in that screening role which is why they have to be used in a pair. However, Adrien Rabiot is someone who can marshal that area of the pitch all on his own.

This will allow the manager to maybe use Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes together something which neither Mourinho, Ole or Rangnick could afford to do.

Only time will tell if Adrien Rabiot has what it takes to be a success at Manchester United but one thing’s for sure, the 27-year-old is definitely an upgrade to McFred.
