Premier League side Chelsea have said to be in pole position to sign Villarreal’s 25-year-old left-back Alfonso Pedraza, according to reports in Italy.

Sports Illustrated cites Italian reports writing: “Chelsea are leading the race to sign Villarreal left-back Alfonso Pedraza this summer, according to reports.

“Chelsea have been previously linked with the defender and there has been a new update.

“As per a new report from Italy, Chelsea are currently in ‘pole position’ for the 25-year-old, who is highly valued by Unai Emery and Villarreal.”

Will Chelsea be able to sign Alfonso Pedraza?

Chelsea are not the only club who are interested in signing the Villarreal full-back as Serie A side Napoli have also registered an interest in him.

The Blues already have three left-backs at their disposal in the form of Chilwell, Emerson and Marcos Alonso but the latter two are said to be leaving this summer so someone like Alfonso Pedraza will not have to worry too much about competition.

But having said that, Ben Chilwell is currently the first-choice left-back for Chelsea and after playing 44 games for Villarreal last season we are not sure if the Spaniard will be too eager to be a bench warmer at Chelsea next season.

He also won the Europa League last season so if he is ready to join a new club then he will be looking for a regular first-team spot in that side and right now, we don’t think Chelsea will be able to guarantee him that.

According to TransferMarkt, Alfonso Pedraza is currently valued at £18 million and he has four more years left on his current deal with Villarreal. As per some rumours, there is a €35 million release clause in his contract but nothing concrete has been established about this.
