Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour has been struggling to get game time during his loan spell at Norwich City and according to former Celtic midfielder Kris Commons, Rangers should try and bring him on board.
Gilmour has seen a meteoric rise at Chelsea and his move to Norwich in the summer was meant to help continue his development. But, Daniel Farke has surprisingly chosen to keep him on the bench, using him sparingly.
The Canaries boss has even come out to defend his selection choices which is why some experts believe Chelsea might call back Billy Gilmour at the start of the new year.
Commons wrote in his Daily Mail column, as quoted: “Whatever happens, he needs to start playing football. If that’s not going to be at Norwich, then Chelsea need to step in and do the right thing,” he said. “If Gilmour is still twiddling his thumbs in January, Rangers should get on the phone to Chelsea and at least ask the question.
“Some people might think it would be a backward step to return to his old club. But Rangers are a different animal now compared to when Gilmour left in 2017.
“Steven Gerrard was one of the best midfielders of his generation. Gilmour would benefit massively from learning from someone like that in training.”
Why Rangers could miss out on Billy Gilmour?
Billy Gilmour is a Scottish lad and also a product of the Rangers academy so personally, he should not have any problems in rejoining the Ibrox outfit.
Rangers are a side that helps young lads get minutes under their belt but whether Gerrard gets to bring in the midfielder or not will depend on two factors.
The first is that whether Chelsea decide to call him back or do they remain patient. To date, the 20-year-old has played only four Premier League games for Norwich City but there’s every chance that his situation could get better in the coming weeks.
If Daniel Farke starts choosing him regularly then we don’t think Chelsea will intervene and terminate the loan deal.
The second reason why Rangers FC could miss out on Billy Gilmour is if another Premier League club shows an interest in him.
Every top-division club is well aware of the talent that youngster has and if he was back available on a loan deal in January then several PL sides would be queuing up to sign him. And there’s no way the Blues will send him out to Scotland when they can help him sharpen his skills in the Premier League itself.
