Chelsea and the other suitors could miss out on this Nigerian defender for more reasons than one: Where’s he headed to?

A series of top Premier League clubs are interested in signing Rangers defender Calvin Bassey but there’s a chance he might not be playing in England next season.

Chelsea, Wolves, West Ham United and Aston Villa have all registered an interest in the 22-year-old as he’s caught everyone’s attention with his performances in the SPFL and especially in the Europa League.

The Gers are reportedly ready to ride this hype train and secure a transfer fee in excess of over £25million but Frank McAvennie has warned Calvin Bassey that a summer move to England could turn out to be a disaster for the Nigerian international.

“Can he go in and play in the Premier League right now? No,” McAvennie told Football Insider. “I don’t think he is good enough for the Premier League. If [Aston Villa manager Steven] Gerrard is buying him, it’s because he has done a job in Scotland.

“England is a whole different game. He’s muscle-bound but if he comes up against someone like Jack Grealish he will get ripped apart.

“I’m sorry to say that Bassey but that’s the truth. Another year up with Rangers and maybe he might be ready. At this moment in time, the brutal truth is he’s not good enough.”

We half agree with this McAvennie on this because Calvin Bassey has spent his academy days with Leicester City so he knows very well what the Premier League is all about. Yes, he might need some months to settle in but at the age of 22, he will have plenty of time to adjust and reposition himself accordingly.

The second reason why Calvin Bassey might not be playing for a club like Chelsea or Villa or West Ham is that according to transfer insider Lahcen Senhaji, Borussia Dortmund have now shown an interest in signing the Rangers man.

BVB is a prime hub for young footballers and in the previous decade, the German outfit has turned many prodigies into superstar players.

Playing for a Premier League side is any player’s dream but if Dortmund can offer him regular playing time then there’s a big chance Calvin Bassey might snub a move to England and take the flight to Germany.

None of the Premier League sides can guarantee him regular starts next season and apart from Chelsea, neither of them can offer him European football as well. Even if there is a spot empty in the first XI but chances are that all of these clubs will sign multiple defenders in the summer.

Dortmund, on the other hand, finished second in the Bundesliga this previous season so the Rangers defender will be able to play with Europe’s elites if he joins them.

Rangers will obviously want Calvin Bassey to join a PL club because the English teams will be ready to offer more money but if the defender wants to join BVB then we don’t think the Gers will stand in his way.
