Cole Palmer has been Chelsea’s creative backbone over the past two season, turning himself into one the club’s most influential attacking player. However, recent speculations are suggesting that if Chelsea fail to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, they might be forced to sell the England international.

According to reports from Team Talk and a few other sources, a clause in Palmer’s contract—along with those of a few other players—allegedly forces Chelsea to entertain offers should they miss out on a Champions League spot next season. Given Palmer’s importance to the team, this claim sent shockwaves through the Chelsea fanbase because losing him would be a major blow for newly appointed manager Enzo Maresca.

No Release Clause for Palmer:

Fortunately for Chelsea supporters, journalist Ben Jacobs has debunked these rumors clarifying on X:

“Understand no Chelsea player has any clause in their contract allowing an exit if the club fail to qualify for UCL. This includes Cole Palmer. Chelsea’s incentive-driven contracts, which have already seen Palmer rewarded with an incremental wage increase and Enzo Fernandez extended, do not offer this type of release clause, formal or informal.”

This confirmation will come as a huge relief to the fans, as Cole Palmer remains one of the club’s most valuable assets. Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City, the 22-year-old has been in sensational form. Last season, he made 40 goal contributions in 45 appearances, and in the current campaign, he has already netted 14 goals in just 25 Premier League matches.

Chelsea’s Champions League Hopes Are Still Alive:

As it stands, Chelsea sit in sixth place in the Premier League table after 25 matches, level on points with fifth-placed Bournemouth. With the revised UEFA qualification rules, a fifth-place finish could be enough to secure a Champions League spot, keeping Chelsea very much in the hunt.

Although the team started the season strongly, their form has dipped in 2025, winning just three of their last eight matches. However, their earlier performances have kept them in contention, and a top-four finish remains a realistic possibility. They are currently only one point behind Manchester City and they way City are playing this season, they will surely drop more points.

Palmer’s contract with Chelsea runs until 2033, meaning there is no immediate pressure on the club to sell him. Instead, the club’s ownership will likely focus on clearing out fringe players to generate funds if needed.
