In recent weeks, Manchester United have shown an interest in signing Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku but the Premier League giants are about to be joined by PSG.
According to a report in TBR Football, Paris Saint-Germain want to sign Christopher Nkunku during the January transfer window and they are ready to offer Randal Kolo Muani in a swap deal.
Nkunku joined Chelsea in 2023 from RB Leipzig for around €60 million but the forward has been really struggling to find his feet under Enzo Maresca. This season, he has started in only one Premier League game and it’s very evident that the Chelsea manager does not favour him too much.
Man United are looking to back their new manager with some reinforcements during the middle of the campaign and that’s the primary reason why they have been keeping tabs on Christopher Nkunku. However, PSG’s entry into this transfer race has the potential to send United’s plans for a toss.
Will Christopher Nkunku choose a Chelsea exit at the start of the new year?
A report in The Athletic claims that the 27-year-old is not planning to leave Stamford Bridge in January. However, if his situation does not get better, there’s bound to be a change in decision.
Nkunku has played just 164 minutes of league football this season and almost all of them have been off the bench. At this moment, Enzo Maresca is clearly trusting Nicolas Jackson as his primary centre-forward and the 23-year-old has repaid that faith with 10 goal contributions in the EPL.
Christopher Nkunku can also play as a right-winger but unfortunately for him, Pedro Neto has come in and made the position his own. And to make things more complex, wingers like Jadon Sancho and Joao Felix are also pushing for starts.
Nkunku has an xG and xA of just 1.77 and 0.18 and a player of his talent deserves to play regularly, doesn’t matter which club it is for.
Chelsea are not in any hurry to offload the 27-year-old and since they are already planning to sign a new world-class striker in January, the prospect of a swap deal with Randal Kolo Muani will not excite them too much. Muani will be a good backup to have but if the Blues can manage to bring in someone like Osimhen or Gyokeres in January, Maresca will have no use of the PSG man.
While Chelsea can happily keep Christopher Nkunku on their books until next summer if he wants to leave the club, the club will not stand in his way. And in such a scenario, a move to PSG rather than Manchester United will make much more sense.
The last thing Enzo Maresca will want is to strengthen United’s hand by giving them a world-class talent so if PSG are serious about signing Nkunku, they should be able to get their hands on him rather easily.
