In a massive development on Wednesday evening, Liverpool seem to have stolen a march over Manchester United in the signing of Darwin Nunez.
Nunez has been one of the most sought-after targets this summer and for some time, Man United were said to be the frontrunners in signing the Benfica man. Benfica are ready to let Darwin Nunez leave but only for a massive transfer fee which is why United were taking their own sweet time to be absolutely sure.
However, in a massive show of intent, Liverpool have just made an official proposal for the 22-year-old worth €100 million. As per Fabrizio Romano, the Anfield outfit’s offer is €80 million plus €20 million in add-ons and now the ball is in Benfica’s court.
He wrote on Twitter: “Official proposal from Liverpool for Darwin Núñez will be €80m plus add ons for €100m package. Benfica will make a decision soon, while Man United are also in contact with his agent.
“Liverpool are prepared to offer Núñez a five year deal, waiting for Benfica decision.”

Do Man United still stand a chance to sign Darwin Nunez?
Until Benfica make up their mind, Manchester United still have a glimmer of hope but we doubt if the management will be ready to spend more than €100 million on a single player.

The United squad is going through major reforms and Erik ten Hag needs reinforcements for other areas as well. Apart from a striker, they also need a centre-back and a defensive midfielder and we highly doubt if ETH has been given a massive transfer fund.
To make matters worse, The Athletic are claiming that Darwin Nunez wants to play in the Champions League which is why he will prefer a move to Liverpool instead of Manchester United. This means, that even if United can convince Benfica, it will be very hard for them to convince the forward himself.
Liverpool’s offer is very close to what Benfica have been demanding so we don’t think the Portuguese side will haggle too much over this fee. We expect them to agree to this amount and once they do, all that will be left will be for Liverpool to do is to chalk out the personal terms with Darwin Nunez.
